Ebook About After being exiled to the farmland around her village, Rowan Northwood takes the only chance at freedom she might ever get: she runs away with a passing Knight and doesn't look back. The woman cares nothing for Rowan's company, yet she’s the first person who isn’t repulsed by the powers that burn within her.Rowan soon learns that the scope of their journey is more than a desperate grasp at adventure. She breaks away from the weighty judgement of her village and has no choice but to abandon her Kingdom altogether. Sir Ightham's past takes them to Kastelir, a young country draped in the shadow of its long-dead Queen: a woman who was all tusks and claws and great, spiralling horns.Hiding her necromancy is no longer Rowan's greatest challenge, and what hounds them across Kingdoms and through mountains is already fifteen-hundred years in the making.Book Dragonoak: The Complete History of Kastelir Review :
All the other reviews that praise the book's prose and pacing will probably say it better than I can. Some books suck you in, and some books make you feel every page as the story plods along. But this book's pacing is steady, and brilliant, like dreaming. You're never presented with too little information or too much information, and although one could argue that there aren't enough plot events to create a constant action-sequence story, it doesn't mean this story is boring. Far from it, in fact. One of the author's strongest skills is in the execution of each plot twist and showing you the consequences of each thing. There's political intrigue, grand history and epics, knights and dragons and monsters. But in the midst of all of it, there's humanity on every page. The story doesn't need to overload you with grandiose like Tolkien or bombard you with explosions to keep you interested. The sincerity of it is enough.Although everyone else has already mentioned the representation in the book, you simply cannot talk about it enough. I loved Rowan and Ran as characters, and the book dives deep into what it means to be an outcast in society, and the effects it has on creating dual or even multiple identities. All the characters have a rich backstory, and it's wonderful to watch it unfold as you go with them on this journey. If you prioritize characters in your reading, you cannot skip over this book. One last note: if there's anyone like me that's worried about the necromancy in this book - don't. It's not a scary or gorey book. The necromancy twist in this book is a new adaptation of this story idea that I haven't seen before, so anyone that's a fan of magical fantasy should definitely read this book too. I loved this book! I got it because it was offered for free for a while and the person spreading the word mentioned a gay necromancer and gender neutral characters. As an agender queer, how could I not at least give it a chance?I don't have much time for reading these days, but this was one of the few books actually downloaded on my Kindle during a recent TA'ship where I found myself with time to read. I was hooked from the moment I started.Farren has mastered the art of "show, don't tell" that keeps you reading chapter after chapter in order to find out if your guesses and assumptions on characters and plots are correct. Farren is also a perfect example of how to keep the plot flowing even without a lot of showy action (random explosions, battles every few pages, etc.). I never found the plot slow or boring, although I did feel as though I could breathe while reading the book. I was comfortably on the edge of my seat, always excited for the next chance to read.Farren's characters are complex and unique and ever so loveable - or at least human and understandable. While a character's gender or sexuality is never explicitly stated with the labels we might use, it's quite clear when we can connect with a character who is like us. And better yet, these characters just belong. This is a totally safe space for queer readers. It's a world we can actually immerse ourselves in and feel like we could actually have our own adventures without our identities being called into question. Finally, I have to appreciate and gush about Farren's world building. We get a glimpse at a few different cultures, all unique from each other and yet all cultures that could and probably do exist. We are introduced to a new sentient species that we can immediately fall in love with and even relate to (I NEED more pane in my life). And we get all of this slowly fed to us, the world building smoothly continuing as we continue to read and therefore continue to learn more about these other cultures.I just lent this book to my sister to read and bought the second book for myself. I cannot wait to read it and cannot wait for the release of the third book! The read through is smooth, easy, and exciting. The plot is easy to get into and the world building isn't overwhelming. Farren, seemingly effortlessly, blends together the perfect ingredients for a fantastic book that will have you immediately hooked. (And WOW, can I compliment the cover art? Because the color, the style - it's all gorgeous and a perfect expression of the book.) I recommend this series and this author to anybody who enjoys reading fantasy.
